Big scores on first weekend of club rugby

Three scores of 50 or more marked in the first weekend of Pirates Grand Challenge rugby with the UJ’s Ratels, Raiders and Wanderers all reaching the milestone while Pirates had a convincing victory over arch-rivals Roodepoort. The UJ side, standing in for the Varsity Cup side, amassed 62 points against Alberton while Raiders defeated Randfontein 69-12 and Wanderers beat Union 50-7.

Lions Gold Cup representatives, Pirates showed a lot of promise in their 34-10 bonus point victory over Roodepoort. The UJ are top of the log after Weekend One with Raiders in second place, Wanderers third, Pirates in fourth, followed by the rest. UJ’s Jamie Campbell is making it habit to lead the scorers and his 21 points place his at the top of the list, followed by Johan Venter from Pirates and Raiders’ veteran Arno Coetzee. Seven players have scored two tries each, three from UJ and two each from Raiders and Wanderers, with Cameron Smith the only forward amongst the flyers.

Raiders 69 Randfontein 21

Raiders: Tries: Tommie Damba (2), Anele Mogabe (2), Marco Alberts, Lincoln Koopman, Dean Gordon, Dewald van Deventer, Stephen Njimla, Ronald Strydom, Penalty Try. Conversions: Arno Coetzee (7).
