The win over the Southern Kings at Emirates Airline Park on Friday was rounded off with the handing over of the Super Rugby Conference Winners trophy, which a proud captain Jaco Kriel accepted and shared with injured captain Warren Whitely and the team.
After a slow start the Emirates Lions got going after half-time to take this encounter by 57-21.
The visitors from Port Elizabeth restricted the Emirates Lions to a competitive 17-7 halftime score. However, yellow cards to Shane Gates for being off-side, and Edgar Marutlulle for a breakdown infringement, cost the Kings heavily on the scoreboard.
Burly centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg had another good match in midfield and he dotted a brace of tries for the Highveld team. Apart from a brace by the strong centre, Andries Coetzee, Faf de Klerk, Franco Mostert, Malcolm Marx, Sylvian Mahuza and Courtnall Skosan each scored a try for the Lions.
James Hall, Stefan Watermeyer with an intercept, and Schalk Ferreira with a late consolation effort, were the try scorers for the Kings.
The Lions travel to Argentina this week for their last pool match before hosting the Quarter Final at homein two weeks’ time.
