Goldens Lions Womens Squad announced

Posted on June 2, 2016

Luyanda Koi and Refilwe Ramahlo have been included in the Golden Lions Womens training squad of 27 for this year. Koi was named the 2015 Forward of the Year and Ramahlo was the Backline player last year. The Lions will be in action in the B section with their opponents being the Limpopo Blue Bulls, the Valke, Leopards and Pumas. The Lions recorded two sterling victories in 2015 beating the Pumas by 50-12 and the Limpopo Blue Bulls by 44-5 and eventually ended the season in second place after the Leopards.

According to Clint van Rooyen, Coordinator of Womens Rugby at the Lions, the team had some good results in 2015 and improved tremendously from previous years. “Our aim is to win our section this year. We showed that we have come long way from 2014 and this is a realistic goal for 2016,” Van Rooyen said.

The women will play two warm-up games before the league kicks off on 9 July with an away game against the Limpopo Blue Bulls. On 25 June they travel to Harrismith where they will play a friendly against the Sharks and on 23 July they play the Cheetahs in Johannesburg (venue still to be confirmed). The coaching staff consists of Zuko Fihla (forwards coach), Marius Adams (backline coach) and team manager Tanya Ulgheri.
