Lions demolish Rebels
The Emirates Lions won their seventh consecutive Vodacom Super Rugby match of 2017 when they beat the Melbourne Rebels 47-10 in Melbourne on Saturday.
The Lions have extended a unique record of their own, winning their last four games on the road without conceding 20 points in the process – a feat that they haven’t done ever before in their history.
Courtnal Skosan became the top try scorer (23) in Super Rugby for the Lions when he rounded off the half with an excellent team try to send his team 19-7 up into the break.
The try of the evening came early in the second half as winger Sylvian Mahuza broke in midfield, took the ball to the 22, then spun out of two ineffectual tackles, dummied the pass and pinned his ears back to score under the posts in a superb individual effort that will be remembered for a long time to come.
Anthony Volminck hadn’t been on the field for a minute when the Rebels dropped a ball out wide and the winger picked up and ran 60 metres to score.
With the clock ticking down, Warren Whiteley added a final try to complete the romp, with the Lions two from two from their Australian tour and only the Brumbies in their path to stop them from completing a clean sweep.
Melbourne Rebels – try: Tom English. Conversion: Reece Hodge. Penalty: Reece Hodge.
Emirates Lions – tries: Kwagga Smith, Ross Cronje, Courtnal Skosan, Sylvian Mahuza, Anthony Volminck, Warren Whiteley, Penalty try. Conversions: Elton Jantjies (5), Penalty try automatic conversion.
