Lions win in trying conditions at Raiders
Shaun Reynold helped the Xerox Golden Lions to a 28-27 victory (halftime 15-21) over the Hino Valke in their SuperSport Rugby Challenge encounter at the Bill Jardine Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday with a penalty a minute before full-time.
The victory ensures that the Lions remain unbeaten with three wins from three outings and they now sit firmly atop the standings of the North Pool, with 14 log points.
Having trailed for large parts of the game, the Lions managed to clinch victory from the jaws of defeat as replacement flyhalf, Reynolds, calmly slotted a last-gasp penalty from a tricky angle near the left-hand touchline of the 22-metre line of the Valke.
The Lions had kept themselves in the contest with tries from James Venter and Pieter Jansen, before a second Jansen try from a driving maul gave the hosts the lead early in the second half.
Both sides finished the match with 14 men, after Anrich Richter got a red card in the 70th minute for the Valke, shortly before Victor Sekekete was given his marching orders five minutes later for a dangerous tackle.
However, it was the Lions who took home the spoils, earning the valuable four log points to keep their unbeaten streak on the go.
Lions scrumhalf Marco Janse van Vuuren was named Man of the Match.
