It is with great sadness that we have come to learn of the passing of one of the Unions great legends , Oom Dries Niemand (86). There is much that one could write about Oom Dries in his achievements on the sporting field ,sport and Rugby administration , as well public life as Longstanding Mayor of Kempton Park .
For me as a player under his administratorship , as selector team manager and Vice President , I have only the greatest respect and fondest memories of him.

He was always a person with the most positive and joyfull  personality that I had ever encountered in rugby . He was very supportive of me in both my playing days and as President of the union and a great inspiration for all of us .I suppose that the only thing one is left with is the Legacy we leave in life .Oom Dries’s Legacy is truly a great one and we will sorely miss him . He was a true people’s person and this I believe was his cornerstone in life .I never encountered anyone who did not like or was fond of Oom Dries ,except for the odd one or two opponents he tackled too hard in a game .Even they would acknowledge his stature in life .
Farewell Oom Dries “Jy het baie  diep spore in die Unie getrap .”we will sorely miss you.
Us  All at the Golden Lions Rugby Union pass on our sincerest and heartfelt condolences to his dear wife , children and grandchildren . Kevin de Klerk President: GLRU
