GLRU Jozi Women's Rugby League 2018

Tel (011) 402-2960

The Golden Lions Rugby Union made history again with the announcement of the first ever official Women’s league. The Jozi Women Rugby League kicked off in April 2018. It was the first time in the Union’s long history that an official league for women took place.

Eight teams competed for the first ever title of provincial women’s club champion.

The announcement of the Jozi Women Rugby League took place at the opening game of the University of Johannesburg’s Varsity Cup game. The league kicked off with three friendly matches. These were:

10 February: University of Johannesburg

17 February: Pirates

24 February: Soweto Eagles

About the GLRU Jozi Women's Rugby League

  • The Women’s Rugby Strategy aims to harness the growing popularity of rugby among girls and women and provides a framework to grow the game from Primary; High School, and Clubs and at high performance level.
  • We want to grow this group because more women participating in rugby means more players, coaches, referees and supporters overall, which is good for the health of the game.
  • While gains had been made in increasing player numbers we have put structures and pathways for players at all levels to have opportunities to play and succeed in rugby.
  • The level of rugby played by the top teams is of a high standard and is the level that we feel we can achieve in a few years given the continued growth of our league and the skills of our Jozi Women’s Clubs.
  • The league played a part in the development of the senior women players and we hope it will continue to grow in strength as we felt that through these league games being played it gives us enough time to work with the players in a professional manner.
  • We were very impressed with the players’ behaviour and growth of knowledge in rugby in terms of understanding their positions and executing their primary jobs.
  • All teams play in a single pool. Each team played home and away games  followed by a semi-final and a final.
  • After the Finals of the 10 side Jozi Women’s League they had a month break.
  • An exciting new women’s sevens competition got off the ground in August 2018, with plenty of young talent on show.
  • The Women’s Sevens Series bridges the gap between the provincial and international levels, providing players with an opportunity to step up and shine.
  • While interest from young women is growing in rugby sevens the new series gives players a chance to develop through valuable game-time, and it gives us a chance to see how the best of the provincial talent perform.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union want to say thank you to SARU for funding us to make Club Rugby possible in Johannesburg.
