An Emirates Airline Park Try Festival

Emirates Lions vs Cell C Sharks | Vodacom URC | Round 8 | Match Report

The Cell C Sharks ran out 47-37 victors over the Emirates Lions in what could be described a try festival at Emirates Airline Park in Round 8 of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. It was a spirited effort by the Emirates Lions which saw them cross the try line five times securing a well-deserved bonus point in the process.

Some positives signs by Emirates Lions were the attitude on attack and their ability to create space for the outside backs to flourish.

In a match which saw close to 2000 fans at Emirates Airline Park in what was the team’s first Vodacom United Rugby Championship home fixture, head coach Ivan van Rooyen complimented his side on the encouraging signs on attack which led to the eventual high score line.

“We spoke quite a bit last week about how we wanted to approach the Sharks game and we achieved a few of those aspects,” commented van Rooyen. “A few guys put up their hands which was great to see, and it only bodes well for the big week we have ahead of the Vodacom Bulls.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash in yet another local Vodacom United Rugby Championship derby, Van Rooyen believes troops have what it takes to get one over the Pretoria side.

“Reflecting back to Saturday, I think we achieved quite a bit of positives and the guys can be proud of themselves,” he said.  “The focus this week will be to rectify the small errors and build on our setpiece play because we know that creates a solid foundation for our backline to finish off opportunities as we did against the Sharks,” he concluded.
