Golden Lions Rugby Union President, Mr. Neville Jardine paid tribute to the first president of the South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) Ebrahim Patel.

Golden Lions Rugby Union President, Mr. Neville Jardine paid tribute to the first president of the South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) Ebrahim Patel, who died at the age of 78.

Patel was instrumental in unifying South African Rugby and key to bringing the memorable World Cup to South Africa in 1995, which united the nation

Jardine lauded Patel as a great sports leader during his time and remembered him as a mentor when he served as an Executive Member of the Transvaal Independent Rugby Football Union (TIRFU) under Patel in the 1980’s,  alongside current SARU President Mr. Mark Alexander and the former SARFU President Mr. Brian Van Rooyen.

The TIRFU executive at the time was extremely dynamic producing three SARU Presidents since unity which is testimony to Mr. Patel and the legacy he leaves behind. He will forever be remembered for his sterling contribution to South African sport, and in particular Rugby

Our sincerest condolences go out to his wife Diana, his children Fatima, Nazley, Ashraf and Fuad, his grand-children and the extended family during this period of bereavement
