The Lions Rugby Company has learnt with great sadness the passing of former Lions and Springbok lock Hannes Strydom. The 1995 World Cup winner passed away in a car accident on Sunday evening.
Lions Rugby Company CEO confirmed the sad news and expressed his condolences, on behalf of the franchise to the family of the fallen hero.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Hannes, said Straeuli. We share a tight bond as members of the 1995 group and to lose yet another one of our brothers is a big blow.
“Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and the rugby fraternity at large,” he concluded.
Strydom played 21 Tests for the Springboks and represented Transvaal – where he formed a formidable lock combination with fellow World Cup winner Kobus Wiese. He also captained the Lions team that hoisted the Currie Cup trophy in 1999.
