The Lions managed to secure a 54-24 win against the EP Elephants in what must go down as one of the most error ridden, stoppage filled matches in a long time.
With a first half of 62 minutes, two red cards and a yellow to the hosts and two yellow to the Lions, this match is one better forgotten. The Elephants lost their front row within the first few minutes of the game, and credit to them for giving their all throughout the game and scoring three tries.
It was clearly a Lions side that hasn’t played together before and especially the backline struggled to string together any proper attack.
But a late surge in the second half eventually stretched their lead to 38-24 and it was clear the home side not only struggled with their discipline but also their fitness. It was always going to be a hard day at the office with 13 men against 15.
Three quick tries in the end saved the day for the visitors.
One or two youngsters for the Lions put up their hands like Sibusiso Sangweni and Izan Esterhuizen when he took the field, but hard work is still ahead to blend these youngsters into a team.
