Emirates Lions utility back Sanele Nohamba was crowned Vodacom United Rugby Championship’s finest by clinching the Player of the Season award for 2023/24.
The Alice-born playmaker was nominated alongside the Vodacom Bulls’ duo of Cameron Hanekom (loose forward) and Kurt-Lee Arendse (wing). Rewarded for a stellar season, the nippy backline star formed an integral part of the Emirates Lions’ rejuvenation this season which saw the emergence of exceptional talent and amongst that, Springbok recognition.
“We are extremely proud of Sanele,” said Lions Rugby CEO Rudolf Straeuli.
“His efforts on the field this season have been nothing short of remarkable, making this accolade fitting for the talented player that he is. His versatility and understanding of the game are second to none and as a franchise, we look forward to many more stellar performances from him.”
A fan favourite, the 25-year-old Nohamba follows in the footsteps of DHL Stormers duo Evan Roos and Manie Libbok, who won this award in the first two seasons of URC. The diminutive playmaker credits his teammates for this achievement as well as Lions fans who have been a strong force this season.
“I’m extremely honoured to have been recognized for this prestigious award. This award would not have been achievable without the support and backing of my coaches at the Lions as well as the brothers who I get to play alongside week in and week out. We have developed a strong bond over the past season which makes playing the game so much more enjoyable.”
“A massive appreciation must also go out to our Lions fans who spend their hard-earned money to come and watch us at Emirates Airline Park. Their voices make such a difference on game days and for that we are thankful. This one is for them,” he concluded.
